1. Antivirus protection. Try Avast or AVG for excellent free options (registration required). I use Avast.
2. A good software Firewall. I recommend the free version from Zone Labs, or at least enable your Windows XP firewall.
3. Good Spyware protection. Spybot & Ad-aware provide most of the answers to your Spyware problems.
Also check out Pest Patrols FREE online database of over 21,000 pests. (of the computer variety)
Finally, remember to UPDATE Microsoft windows. Almost every virus or exploit that has flown accross the Internet in the past year used holes that Microsoft had already patched. Microsoft releases Windows updates on the 2nd Tuesday of every month (or earlier if the threat is serious)

Congrats Dave & Jen! It's so cool to get an update on old friends every now and again. Not that you are old, just friends from a previous life. At least that's how it feels.
Anyway, I hope you have fun with ALL your children, cat included, and that you have a wonderful time as a new family.
